I-75 and I-96 Weekend Closures Snarl Drives in Detroit

DETROIT, Mich. — Two of Detroit’s busiest freeways are shut down in sections this weekend while state road crews repave and patch pavement, and drivers heading downtown should plan on detours through Monday morning.

Northbound I-75 is blocked from the Lodge Freeway up to I-375. Going the other way, southbound I-75 is shut from I-375 down to I-96. The Michigan Department of Transportation shut both directions at 9 p.m. Friday and plans to reopen them at 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9.

Several ramps feeding southbound I-75 are also blocked, including the Gratiot ramp, the northbound I-375 ramp and the Grand River ramp. Northbound drivers coming off the Lodge in either direction cannot get onto northbound I-75.

Northbound traffic is being sent to I-96 and then I-94 before rejoining I-75. Southbound drivers take I-94 and then I-96 back to I-75.

Farther west, every eastbound lane of I-96, express and local alike, is out of service between Southfield Road and Schaefer until Sunday at 5 p.m. That detour routes drivers north on Southfield and east on M-5 before they return to I-96.

More work follows early next week. The westbound I-96 express lanes between Davison and Greenfield are scheduled to close Monday morning at 9 and stay closed into Tuesday afternoon, reopening by 3 p.m.
