Southfield, Mich. — After a weekend shutdown, westbound I-696 reopened Monday morning from the I-75 interchange over to the Lodge Freeway on newly rebuilt pavement.
MDOT called it a major step in Restore the Reuther. Crews closed both directions between Hazel Park’s I-75 interchange and M-10 in Southfield over the weekend so westbound traffic could shift onto the reconstructed roadway.
Nearly every westbound ramp came back with the lanes on Monday, Oct. 12. The westbound Woodward Avenue exit stays shut for resurfacing until Saturday, Oct. 17. Other exits from I-75 toward M-10 opened with westbound 696, aside from Woodward.
Eastbound traffic on 696 is still shut between the Lodge and I-75 while crossover work continues. MDOT expects that direction back before the end of the year, with detours still posted.
Motorists have spent more than a year weaving through barrels. MDOT says only one major step remains after this, with eastbound set to reopen later this year when crossover work wraps.
