LANSING, Mich. — A new survey finds Michigan likely voters reject a call to rewrite the state constitution by nearly 2 to 1 ahead of November’s Proposal 1 vote.
Mitchell Research & Communications reported 51% opposed and 26% in favor among likely voters. Field work ran Oct. 1, 2026.
Proposal 1 asks whether elected delegates should meet in 2027 to draft a general revision that voters would then accept or reject. The 1963 constitution puts that question on the ballot every 16 years.
Approval would open Michigan’s first constitutional convention since 1961. The current charter covers jury trial rights, voter eligibility and the state’s duty to offer free public K–12 schooling.
Among backers, party ID was mixed — 29% Democrats, 26% Republicans and 22% independents. Support peaked with voters 18–29 at 45%, then ages 30–44. Black voters also ranked high among those in favor. The question appears statewide Nov. 3.
