DETROIT, Mich. — For Canadian Thanksgiving on Monday, organizers flew an aerial thank-you banner over the Detroit River with a message that Detroit and Canada are bridged in friendship.

The Downtown Detroit Partnership helped a Metro Detroit group with the project. The banner measured 30 feet by 9 feet and was set to fly along the river Oct. 12 from late morning into early afternoon, weather allowing, on the stretch from Belle Isle toward the Gordie Howe span.

CEO Eric Larson said the gesture was meant to recognize U.S.–Canada friendship and Canada’s continued leadership, including work that brought the Gordie Howe crossing to life. The banner flew morning and afternoon and was visible on both sides of the border.

Windsor residents reacted to the aerial banner Monday. Larson said organizers wanted to express gratitude on Canada’s Thanksgiving amid cross-border friction and tariffs hitting the auto sector.

The effort also celebrated the Gordie Howe bridge and Canada’s long commitment to the crossing. Local leaders said Detroit and Windsor are strongest when they work together across business, health care and everyday family ties.
