Detroit, Mich. — Shoppers packed Detroit People’s Food Co-op on Saturday, Oct. 10, after a community call for support following recent financial setbacks at the North End grocery.
Opened in 2024, the community-owned market stocks goods from nearby makers and made-to-order meals, with thousands of member-owners helping steer its future.
General Manager Aaron Orr said summer equipment failures, power outages and extreme weather cost the new business roughly two weeks of sales, including a cooler-wall failure that wiped out tens of thousands of dollars in product.
A social media push urged metro Detroiters to shop the Black-led co-op. Organizers said the response showed neighbors taking care of each other, and the store asked residents to keep the momentum going as member-owners and regular customers.
The co-op sits on Woodward Avenue in the North End as a community-owned grocery focused on fresh, local food. Anyone can shop without a membership; membership offers ownership votes for adults who join.
