Flint Township, Mich. — A solo pilot set a single-engine plane down on the I-69 shoulder near I-75 after a mechanical failure while descending toward Bishop Airport.

Flint Township police said the engine stalled on Oct. 10 during the approach, and the pilot used the freeway shoulder. No one was hurt and no vehicles were damaged.

No cars were struck, police said. Investigators are working with FAA officials and airport staff at Bishop.

The landing closed a tense moment on a busy Genesee County corridor that feeds traffic between Flint and the Detroit metro along the I-69/I-75 interchange.

Police said the pilot had been descending toward Bishop International Airport when the stall occurred, leaving little time to find another landing zone away from traffic.

Metro Detroit travelers often use that junction as a gateway north; the safe shoulder landing kept the incident from becoming a multi-vehicle crash on the freeway.
